I’m talking about the relationship between my brain and my palate. I still get nervous when I am invited to a cupping, or even when im cupping within our own space. Whether its new coffees we are looking at, or just checking on the vibrancy of the crop. Will I choose the “right” coffee, will I taste what others say I’m supposed to taste, will I use the right descriptors? It can be intimidating. but the more I cup, the more comfortable I get, and the more trust I have in my palate…
And you should too. It doesnt matter what terms the roaster used on the bag. Taste it yourself. own whatever it is you taste. If the bag says stone fruit and you dont know what stone fruit is, but something about the coffee reminds you of a peach or cherry, you nailed it. One of the great thing about coffee is that its an experience, and its personal. So dont be shy. When you try a coffee, think about the taste, the smell, the way it makes you feel….then, describe that for yourself.
Finally, here’s my confession, and why I started to write this blog……I taste coconut in my toothpaste, and I dont care if you agree with me, because I am learning to trust my palate.
